HHI Secondary School (Lunzu Campus)

HHI Secondary School (Lunzu Campus) is a secondary school at Lunzu, on the northern edge of Blantyre in southern Malawi. HHI is the abbreviation of the Henry Henderson Institute, a mission school founded in Blantyre in 1909. The Henry Henderson Institute was established in the grounds of St Michael and All Angels Church, Blantyre, and named after Henry Henderson (1843-91), the Church of Scotland lay missionary who founded the Blantyre Mission in 1876. Its secondary school opened in 1957; Willie Chokani, its headmaster until his imprisonment in 1959, was the first African headmaster in Nyasaland. The Blantyre Mission's church is now the Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP), which serves southern Malawi. Secondary education in Malawi runs from Form 1 to Form 4 and ends with the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), set by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB). Lunzu is a trading centre that straddles the boundary between Blantyre City and Blantyre District: the Malawi Electoral Commission's 2025 register places a South Lunzu ward within Blantyre City Council, while Lunzu Market Offices and Lunzu F.P. School are polling centres of Blantyre District Council. Blantyre, founded as a Church of Scotland mission in 1876 and named after David Livingstone's birthplace, is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce and its second-largest city.
