Chaminade Marianist Secondary School

Chaminade Marianist Secondary School is a Catholic secondary school in Lilongwe, Malawi, run by the Society of Mary, the religious congregation known as the Marianists. It was founded in 2019 and is a separate institution from the older Chaminade Secondary School in Karonga, which the Marianists founded in 1962. The Marianists' 2024 Directory of Marianist Education lists the school with 400 students, 23 teaching staff and five administrative staff; five members of the order work there, four of them as teachers. The directory records boarding, a library and sports facilities, gives English and Chichewa as the languages taught, and describes a school year running from January to March, May to June and September to November, with holidays in April, August and December. The Society of Mary is a Catholic congregation of brothers and priests founded by William Joseph Chaminade in Bordeaux, France, on 2 October 1817, and it is known particularly for its work in education. Its headquarters are in Rome. Its other work in Malawi includes Chaminade Secondary School and the MIRACLE rural skills-training centre, both in Karonga. Secondary education in Malawi runs from Form 1 to Form 4 and ends with the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), set by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB). Lilongwe, named after the Lilongwe River, has been the capital of Malawi since 1975, when it replaced Zomba, and is the country's largest city, with 989,318 people at the 2018 census.
