Atsikana Pa Ulendo Private Secondary School

Atsikana Pa Ulendo Private Secondary School is an all-girls boarding secondary school near Nsaru Trading Centre, in rural Lilongwe District, Malawi. Its name means "Girls on the Move", and it is known as APU. According to the school's website, it is operated by the APU Malawi Trust, is registered with the Ministry of Education and follows the Malawi curriculum. The website traces the school to Christie Johnson, a Canadian teacher, and Memory Mdyetseni, a Malawian teacher, who taught together as volunteers in 2000 and went on to support 24 girls through secondary school. In 2006, after Memory Mdyetseni completed a BA degree, the two set out to found a girls' secondary school. In 2007 Henry Mdyetseni, later her husband and the project manager, persuaded chiefs in his home area, Nsalu, to donate 23 hectares of land, and funds raised with the help of Rotarians allowed work to begin. The site reports 360 students, "most of whom are on full scholarship", and more than 450 former students who have obtained the Malawi School Certificate of Education; of these, 70 are in post-secondary education, 50 are training as nurses and 80 have become primary school teachers. It describes: - classrooms, dormitories and a computer laboratory - a tree nursery and an extensive school garden - a primary school opened in September 2014, later named Victoria Gardens Academy Students give three hours each Wednesday afternoon to service work on the campus and in nearby communities. Its Canadian partner, the Atsikana Pa Ulendo (Girls On The Move) Malawi Education Foundation, was formed as a British Columbia society in 2009 and works with the Malawi trust under an operating agreement. Secondary education in Malawi runs from Form 1 to Form 4 and ends with the MSCE, set by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB).
