St. Patrick's Secondary School - Mzedi

St. Patrick's Secondary School - Mzedi is a boys' secondary school at Mzedi in southern Malawi, run by the Brothers of the Immaculate Conception (Brothers FIC), a Catholic religious congregation. The congregation places the school within the Catholic parish of Mzedi in the Archdiocese of Blantyre. According to the congregation's own account, the Brothers FIC took over St. Patrick's from the Xaverian Brothers in 1960, the year they first arrived in Malawi. Writing in 2019 about the school's St Patrick's Day celebration, the congregation described it as a school for boys only, said its students had represented the Shire Highlands Education Division in competitions at regional, national and international level, and noted that students with visual impairments had done well there, some going on to university. The Malawi Electoral Commission's 2025 register of centres lists St. Patricks Secondary School as a polling centre in the Mapanga-Mzedi ward of Blantyre City Council, in the constituency the register names BT City Mapanga-Mpingwe-Mzedi. The same register lists a separate Mzedi School in the Chisombezi ward of neighbouring Chiradzulu District Council. The Brothers FIC (Fratres Immaculatae Conceptionis) describe themselves as an international community of about 300 religious brothers working in Chile, Ghana, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Malawi and the Netherlands. The congregation's founder was Father Ludovicus Rutten, and its headquarters are in Maastricht. Secondary education in Malawi runs from Form 1 to Form 4 and ends with the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), set by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB). Mzedi lies on the edge of Blantyre, Malawi's centre of finance and commerce and its second-largest city, which had 800,264 residents at the 2018 census.
