Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital

Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital is Malawi's largest government referral and teaching hospital and one of the country's four central hospitals. It opened in the late 1950s, named after the British royal family. Because Blantyre has no district hospital, it serves both as the tertiary referral centre for the southern region and as the district general hospital for the city, which is why published catchment figures range from around 1.2 million locally to over 7 million regionally. Official capacity is about 1,350 beds, and the hospital routinely operates above it. A 2023 study recorded more than 400,000 outpatient attendances and over 75,000 admissions a year, roughly double the admissions reported in 2012. Named departments include internal medicine, paediatrics and child health, obstetrics and gynaecology, trauma and orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, laboratory medicine and pharmacy, alongside a neonatal unit and a paediatric surgical intensive care unit. The Adult Emergency and Trauma Centre opened in October 2011 and includes a four-bed resuscitation area. The paediatric oncology unit, established in 1995, grew from 16 to 23 beds and treats over 200 newly diagnosed children a year from across Malawi. The Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care opened on the grounds in July 2017. Gogo Chatinkha is the maternity unit. The hospital is the principal teaching hospital of Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, whose Mahatma Gandhi campus adjoins it, and hosts the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Research Programme on Chipatala Avenue, Chichiri. Public medical care is provided free of charge. In 1961 Ceciwa Khonje challenged being denied access to the delivery ward on racial grounds; her protest led to the facility's integration.
