Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care

The Mercy James Centre for Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care opened on 11 July 2017 on the grounds of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre. It was built by Raising Malawi, the non-profit founded by Madonna in 2006, in partnership with Malawi's Ministry of Health, and is named after her daughter Mercy James, who spoke at the opening alongside President Peter Mutharika and Health Minister Peter Kumpalume. The centre has three paediatric operating theatres, a six-bed paediatric intensive care unit and a surgical ward reported at between 50 and 60 beds, together with two four-bed high-dependency units and a day clinic. Before it opened, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital had fewer than ten intensive care beds in total, and Malawi had roughly five to six paediatric surgeons for a paediatric population above eight million. It is the national referral centre for paediatric surgery, houses the country's only paediatric intensive care unit and performs all neonatal surgery in Malawi. It is a major referral point for burns, congenital anomalies, childhood cancers and neurological conditions, and also admits medical cases including cerebral malaria. Between 2017 and 2019 it recorded 5,205 outpatient visits, 3,730 theatre cases, 3,249 ward admissions and 579 intensive care admissions; by June 2023 it had passed 10,000 operations. A Hyperfine portable MRI installed in 2021 had scanned more than 200 children within its first months, replacing a broken conventional scanner. The centre is a teaching facility for Malawian paediatric surgeons and its medical director is Professor Eric Borgstein. Raising Malawi describes it as a free public facility.
