The AMECA Healthcare Centre at Chilaweni village in Blantyre district was opened on 8 May 2017 by the then Minister of Health, Dr Peter Kumpalume, a year after its foundation stone was laid on 3 May 2016. It was built by AMECA, which stands for Alex's Medical and Educational Clinic In Africa, a UK registered charity founded in December 2006 by Ruth Markus in memory of her son Alex. Day to day the centre is run by the Blantyre District Health Office. It serves about 38,000 people across 23 villages and sees roughly 4,000 outpatients a month. Services cover outpatient primary care, a dispensary, the Expanded Programme on Immunisation, maternity and physiotherapy. The maternity unit, completed in November 2020, upgraded the facility from a healthcare clinic to a health centre. It has a three-bed delivery room with individual cubicles for privacy, a four-bed antenatal ward and a six-bed postnatal ward, and runs weekday antenatal clinics, deliveries, postnatal consultations and family planning clinics. A physiotherapy clinic has run once a week since January 2023, seeing more than 60 patients a month, most of them children with cerebral palsy alongside older patients with arthritis and stroke, and supplying wheelchairs, standing frames, walking aids, adaptive chairs and orthotics. The site has mains electricity brought to the village, a solar-powered borehole, staff housing for four staff and their families, and an ambulance part-funded with Saint Andrews International School in Blantyre. Solar panels power oxygen concentrators and suction machines in the maternity unit. A midwife mentorship programme ran from January 2019, funded by the Addax and Oryx Foundation.
