About

Masonic Temple is a Masonic meeting building in Blantyre, Malawi. A Masonic lodge, also called a private or constituent lodge, is the basic organisational unit of Freemasonry, and the building in which lodges meet was traditionally called a temple. In many places the terms "Masonic centre" or "Masonic hall" have since replaced it; in this sense the word describes a meeting place rather than a place of worship. Several lodges, and other Masonic bodies, often use the same premises at different times. Each lodge works under the constitution of a Grand Lodge. Freemasonry describes itself as a fraternity rather than a religion, although candidates are generally expected to profess belief in a Supreme Being. Blantyre is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce and its second-largest city, with a population of 800,264 in 2018. It was founded in 1876 through the missionary work of the Church of Scotland and named after Blantyre in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, the birthplace of the explorer David Livingstone. It became a British consular station in 1883 and a municipality by 1895, making it Malawi's oldest municipality, and in 1956 it was merged with neighbouring Limbe to form one city. The lodges that meet here, their meeting times and contact details have not been published online.
