Al Madina Masjid, Mpingwe, Limbe

Al Madina Masjid is a mosque at Mpingwe in Limbe, Blantyre, in the Southern Region of Malawi. Islam has a long history in southern Malawi. It arrived with Arab and Swahili traders from the 15th century, and the Yao, who converted during the 19th century, now make up about 72 per cent of the country's Muslims. Muslims are concentrated in the Southern Region, and the CIA World Factbook put them at about 13.8 per cent of Malawi's population in 2018. Nationally, the Muslim Association of Malawi, founded in March 1957 as the Nyasaland Muslim Association, acts as the umbrella body for the country's Muslim community. It states that it has built more than 200 mosques across all 28 districts. Limbe lies about 11 km east of central Blantyre. Founded in 1909 and joined with Blantyre in 1956, it is the operational headquarters and workshop base of Malawi Railways and home to much of the city's industry, and it has a strong Asian Malawian and Yao culture.
