Hajra Masjid, Bangwe is a mosque in the Bangwe area on the eastern side of Blantyre City, in southern Malawi. "Masjid" is the Arabic word for a mosque. Islam reached the region with Arab and Swahili traders, and the Yao people converted in large numbers during the nineteenth century; they remain the largest group among Malawi's Muslims. At the 2018 census 13.8 per cent of Malawians were Muslim, with the highest shares in Mangochi and Machinga districts; in Blantyre City the figure was 10.11 per cent. Nearly all Malawian Muslims are Sunni. The five daily prayers follow the position of the sun, so their times shift through the year, and a mosque's own timetable is the reliable guide to when congregational prayers are held. Bangwe lies between Mpingwe Hill and Malabvi, close to Bangwe Hill, east of Limbe. Blantyre was founded in 1876 by missionaries of the Church of Scotland and named after David Livingstone's birthplace in Scotland; it merged with Limbe in 1956 and is now Malawi's centre of finance and commerce and its second-largest city, with 800,264 residents at the 2018 census. The mosque has not published a prayer timetable or details of its facilities online, so visitors are advised to phone ahead or ask locally.
