Woolworths Riverwalk Mall

Woolworths Riverwalk Mall is a branch of the South African food and clothing retailer Woolworths at Riverwalk Mall on Tlokweng Road, Gaborone, Botswana. Tredinnick, the developer of the shopping centre, names Woolworths among Riverwalk's anchor tenants, together with Pick n Pay, Mug & Bean and Orange. The developer dates the centre's completion to 2003, gives its value as P100 million and says it was developed in partnership with the Botswana Development Corporation. Woolworths Holdings Limited traces its origins to 30 October 1931, when Max Sonnenberg opened the first Woolworths store on Plein Street in Cape Town. The group is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, sells groceries, clothing, homeware, cosmetics and financial services, and had around 1,591 locations across its businesses in 2025. It is unconnected with the Australian Woolworths Group and with the former American F. W. Woolworth Company; a South African court dismissed an injunction brought by the American retailer against the use of the name. In June 2014 the company said Woolworths had been present in Botswana for more than 26 years, with 22 stores selling food and clothing, and that it had moved its Botswana business from franchised to company-owned stores. Tlokweng Road runs east from central Gaborone towards the neighbouring village of Tlokweng. Gaborone, founded in 1964 as the capital of Botswana, is the country's largest city, with 246,325 people at the 2022 census.
