PEP Gaborone Main Mall

PEP Gaborone Main Mall is a branch of the South African-founded clothing and homeware retailer PEP on the Main Mall in central Gaborone, Botswana. The Main Mall is a car-free shopping and commercial area that runs east to west through the city centre, with the Government Enclave and the National Assembly at its western end and the Gaborone City Town Council complex at its eastern end. The Pula Arch, the Botswana Stock Exchange and the National Museum are nearby. PEP was founded in 1965 by Renier van Rooyen, who had run a bargain shop in Upington since 1955; the first PEP Stores branch opened in De Aar, South Africa, followed by Kimberley and Postmasburg. PEP is a subsidiary of the Pepkor group. Pepkor reports 1,685 PEP stores, together with 552 PEP Cell and 478 PEP Home stores and 18,000 employees, and describes PEP as the largest single-brand retailer in South Africa. It reports the chain's business outside South Africa separately as PEP Africa, with 221 stores and 1,600 employees selling clothing, footwear, homeware and cellular products. Gaborone lies in the south-eastern corner of Botswana, within 15 kilometres of the South African border. The modern town was founded in 1964, became the capital of independent Botswana on 30 September 1966 and had 246,325 residents at the 2022 census.
