Malamulo Adventist Hospital is a Seventh-day Adventist mission hospital at Makwasa in Thyolo district, about 65 km south-east of Blantyre city. The mission was founded in 1902 and began as a primary school. Medical work started in 1915, when Irene Fourie, an American hydrotherapist, opened the first clinic. Dr Carl Birkenstock arrived from South Africa in 1925 and pioneered leprosy treatment here; the leprosarium peaked in 1962 with 300 inpatients and 250 outpatients and closed in 1979. The site developed into a referral hospital in 1953. Bed capacity is reported between 200 and 300 depending on the source and year, with around 120 outpatients a day. Surgical volume grew from about 850 operations a year in 2013 to more than 3,000 by 2020. Services include general medicine, surgery, gynaecology, maternity, paediatrics, a dental clinic, an eye clinic, radiology, a clinical laboratory, an HIV/AIDS treatment centre, malnutrition care, community health with family planning and antenatal clinics, and women's cancer screening through a Women's Centre offering Pap smears and colposcopy. The hospital also runs 15 mobile sites and two health centres serving around 70,000 rural people. It is managed by Adventist Health International with support from Loma Linda University Health, and is a member of the Christian Health Association of Malawi. It hosts a five-year PAACS general surgery residency certified through COSECSA, which began enrolling in August 2014 and produced its first two graduates in December 2020, and was recognised in 2013 as Loma Linda's first international ACGME location. Malamulo College of Health Sciences shares the campus. Services are offered in Chichewa and English. In August 2025 the hospital ended free treatment for children under 12 after a donor withdrew funding; its government agreement through CHAM covers adults and maternal services only.
