Wenela Bus Station is a bus station in Blantyre, Malawi's commercial capital, in the Southern Region of the country. Blantyre's long-distance coach services run from the city centre and from Wenela to Lilongwe and Mzuzu, and to other African cities, including Johannesburg and Harare. Wenela was the popular name of the Witwatersrand Native Labour Association (WNLA), the recruiting agency set up by South Africa's gold mines to bring in migrant workers. It grew into a large organisation with its own depots, buses and aeroplanes across southern Africa, including Nyasaland, as Malawi was then known. Blantyre was founded in 1876 through the missionary work of the Church of Scotland and is named after Blantyre in Scotland, the birthplace of the explorer David Livingstone. In 1956 it was merged with its sister town, Limbe, about 11 km to the east, to form one city. It is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce and its second-largest city, with 800,264 residents at the 2018 census. Operators, fares and departure times for services from Wenela have not been published online, so travellers should confirm departures with the coach operator before travelling.
