Salima District Council Secretariat

Salima District Council Secretariat is the administrative office of Salima District Council, the local authority for Salima District in the Central Region of Malawi. It stands in Salima, the district's main town. The Malawi Electoral Commission's 2025 register of established voter registration centres lists 183 centres under Salima District Council, spread across the constituencies and wards of the district. Malawi's district councils are established under the Local Government Act of 1998, which sets out a framework for decentralisation. There are 28 of them, largely rural and matching the former administrative districts. A council's members include elected ward councillors, with traditional authorities sitting as non-voting members. The secretariat is the council's paid administration: it is headed by the district commissioner, who acts as the district's chief executive, with directors responsible for areas such as finance, administration and public works. Functions devolved to district councils include primary education, primary health, forestry, natural resources and community services. Salima District covers 2,196 square kilometres and had 478,346 residents at the 2018 census. It borders Lake Malawi, and Senga Bay on its shore is a popular weekend destination from Lilongwe. Salima town, the district capital, had 36,789 residents in 2018 and has a station on the Sena railway line. Opening hours for the secretariat have not been published, and phoning ahead before a visit is advisable.
