MRA Liwonde Customs & Excise

MRA Liwonde Customs & Excise is a customs and excise office of the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) in Liwonde, Machinga District, in Malawi's Southern Region. The MRA is the Government of Malawi's revenue agency. It was established under the Malawi Revenue Authority Act, which came into force on 15 February 2000 and made the authority responsible for the assessment, collection and receipt of specified revenue on the Government's behalf. Property previously held for the Government's Department of Customs and Excise and Department of Income Tax passed to the new authority. The revenue laws it administers include the Customs and Excise Act, the Taxation Act and the Value Added Tax Act, and its statutory duties extend to promoting tax compliance, improving services to taxpayers and countering tax fraud. Liwonde lies in the Shire River valley and is a road junction between Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi and Zomba. It has one of the main stations on the Nacala railway, which links it eastwards, via Nayuchi on the Mozambican border, to the port of Nacala, and it is the base for visitors to Liwonde National Park. The town had 36,421 residents at the 2018 census.
