Machinga District Council Offices

Machinga District Council Offices are the offices of Machinga District Council, the local government authority for Machinga district in Malawi's Southern Region. They stand at Liwonde, a town on the Shire River. The Malawi Electoral Commission's 2025 register of centres lists Machinga District Council with eight constituencies: Machinga North East, Machinga South East, Machinga Central, Machinga East, Machinga Mikoko, Machinga Central East, Machinga Likwenu and Machinga South. The Commission's boundary descriptions place parts of Liwonde Township in the Machinga Likwenu constituency and build each constituency from the areas of traditional authorities, among them Liwonde, Kawinga, Chikweo and Nyambi. Under the Local Government Act of 1998, Malawi's district councils are the local authorities for their districts, responsible for local development planning and for services devolved to them, including primary education, health and agricultural extension. Each council's elected ward councillors sit alongside the district's Members of Parliament and traditional leaders, and its secretariat is headed by a District Commissioner. Liwonde lies in the Shire River valley at a crossroads linking Zomba, Balaka and Mangochi, on the road between Zomba and Lilongwe. It has one of the most important stations on the Nacala railway and is the starting point for trips into Liwonde National Park, by boat along the Shire or by road.
