Chitipa District Council Office

Chitipa District Council Office is the administrative office of Chitipa District Council, the local government authority for Chitipa District, at Chitipa Boma in the far north of Malawi. The Malawi Electoral Commission's 2025 register of centres, issued under the heading of Chitipa District Council, names the Chitipa District Council Chamber as the district tally centre, where results from the district's polling centres are brought together. The register covers the district's five constituencies: Chitipa North, Chitipa Central, Chitipa East, Chitipa Chendo and Chitipa South. Each district in Malawi is headed by a District Commissioner, the district's chief executive, who manages its finances and coordinates the initial response to emergencies. The post dates from the colonial administration and is filled by presidential appointment rather than by election. Chitipa District is Malawi's northernmost district. It borders Karonga District and the neighbouring countries of Tanzania and Zambia, and it had 234,927 inhabitants at the 2018 census. It is divided into five traditional areas: Misuku in the east, Kameme in the north, Bulambia in the centre, and Wenya and Nthalire in the south. The district is known for the number of languages spoken there; Chitumbuka is the regional lingua franca, alongside Chindali, Chisukwa, Chilambya and Chinyiha. Chitipa town, formerly Fort Hill, lies very near the point where the borders of Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania meet, and had 17,743 residents at the 2018 census; a tarred road to the town was completed in 2013.
