Chitipa District Council Chamber

Chitipa District Council Chamber is the meeting chamber of Chitipa District Council, in Chitipa, the administrative centre of Chitipa District in northern Malawi. It lies on the M9 road in the town. The Malawi Electoral Commission's 2025 list of established voter registration centres for Chitipa District Council names the chamber as the district tally centre, where election results for the district are brought together. The same list gives a total of 183 registration centres across the district's five constituencies (Chitipa North, Chitipa Central, Chitipa East, Chitipa Chendo and Chitipa South), each of which has its own constituency tally centre. District councils are the main tier of local government in Malawi, set up under the Local Government Act of 1998 as part of the country's policy of decentralisation. Each council has councillors elected from the district's wards, and its administration is headed by the District Commissioner. Functions devolved to the councils include primary education, primary health care, water supply, local roads and markets. The chamber is where the full council sits to debate and decide council business. Chitipa, also known as Fort Hill, is the capital of Malawi's northernmost district and lies very near the point where Malawi's borders with Zambia and Tanzania meet. The town had 17,743 residents at the 2018 census. The district covers 4,288 square kilometres and had 234,927 people at the same census. The town's road links were much improved in 2013, when a tarred road was completed.
