Blantyre District Agriculture Office

Blantyre District Agriculture Office is a government agriculture office in Blantyre, Malawi, forming part of the Ministry of Agriculture's extension network. The Ministry's Department of Agricultural Extension Services states that it implements its activities "through Agricultural Development Divisions which are located in eight ecological zones of the country namely, Lilongwe, Blantyre, Salima, Kasungu, Machinga, Shire Valley, Karonga and Mzuzu and in all the 28 districts in the country." The department gives its mission as providing "demand driven Agricultural extension services in partnership with civic, NGO, private and farmer organisations", with the aim of achieving food, nutrition and income security. Departments listed on the Ministry's website include Agricultural Extension Services, Animal Health and Livestock Development, Agricultural Planning Services, Agricultural Research Services, Land Resource Conservation and a Mega Farm Support Department. The Ministry's headquarters are at Capital Hill in Lilongwe. Blantyre is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce and its second-largest city, with a population of 800,264 in 2018. It was founded in 1876 through the missionary work of the Church of Scotland and named after Blantyre in Scotland, the birthplace of David Livingstone. It became a municipality by 1895, making it Malawi's oldest, and in 1956 it was merged with neighbouring Limbe to form one city.
