Blantyre District Health Office

Blantyre District Health Office is the district health administration office for Blantyre, in the Southern Region of Malawi. District health offices are administrative bodies for public health services rather than treatment centres. The Ministry of Health's Health Sector Strategic Plan III, which covers 2023 to 2030, sets out how health services are run at district level under Malawi's decentralised system of local government. It provides that "the Director of Health and Social Services at the District Council shall provide overall technical coordination in line with Council governance arrangements", and that a district stakeholder forum provides multi-sectoral and partner coordination at district level. Blantyre has two local authorities, Blantyre City Council and Blantyre District Council, which the Malawi Electoral Commission treats as separate councils in its 2025 register of centres. Blantyre is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce and its second-largest city, with a population of 800,264 at the 2018 census. It grew from a Church of Scotland mission founded in 1876 and is named after the Scottish birthplace of David Livingstone. The city is also home to the government-run Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, the country's largest referral hospital, with 1,000 beds.
