Woolworths Sebele

Woolworths Sebele is a branch of the South African retailer Woolworths at Sebele Centre, a shopping centre on the northern side of Gaborone, Botswana. Sebele Centre opened on 27 June 2011. The Sunday Standard reported at the time that it was owned by Prime Time, a property company listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange, with construction managed by Time Projects. The first phase covered 9,000 square metres, and a second phase of 10,000 square metres was then under construction. Tenants named at the opening included Woolworths and Pick n Pay, alongside restaurants, hardware and furniture shops, professional services outlets and a bureau de change. The centre stands on the A1 and was planned to serve Phakalane, Sebele, Block 7, Block 8, Broadhurst and the airport area. The operator, Woolworths Holdings Limited, is a South African retail group headquartered in Cape Town. Max Sonnenberg founded the business in 1931, opening the first store on Plein Street, Cape Town, on 30 October that year. The group also owns the Australian retailer Country Road and the pet store chain Absolute Pets. It describes itself as based in South Africa and trading in a further ten countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Food makes up 69 per cent of its turnover and concession sales, with fashion, beauty and home at 27 per cent and financial services at 4 per cent. In 2011 the group announced that joint ventures with local partners would replace franchising as its model for expansion elsewhere in Africa. Gaborone lies in the south-eastern corner of Botswana, within 15 kilometres of the South African border. The modern town was founded in 1964 and had 246,325 residents at the 2022 census, about a tenth of the national population. The suburb of Phakalane lies about 13 kilometres north of the city centre. The branch's product range has not been published online, so phoning ahead before travelling is advisable.
