Gaborone Civic Centre

Gaborone Civic Centre is the office complex of Gaborone City Council, the local authority for Botswana's capital, in central Gaborone. A change-of-land-use notice in the Botswana Government Gazette of 13 November 2020 directed objections to the council's Chief Physical Planner at Private Bag 0089, Gaborone, or to the Physical Planning Office in rooms 218, 226, 227 and 229 at the Civic Centre. Gaborone City Council is the elected local government for the city. Its councillors represent wards across Gaborone and each year elect a mayor and deputy mayor from among themselves, while the city clerk heads the council's administration. The council's responsibilities include sewerage, street lighting, public health clinics and public primary schools; water and electricity are supplied by national parastatals. Botswana is a unitary state, and the council's powers are delegated by central government through the ministry responsible for local government. Gaborone has been Botswana's capital since independence in 1966. The city was built from the early 1960s as a new seat of government and takes its name from Kgosi Gaborone of the Batlokwa.
