Shakawe is a common starting point for fishing trips on the Okavango Panhandle and a staging post for the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 40 km away. The village is on the national electricity grid and has shopping centres with supermarkets; it is served by Shakawe Airport, and buses run to Maun, about five hours away by road.
