Kamuzu Central Hospital is one of Malawi's four central hospitals and the tertiary referral hospital for the Central Region, taking referrals from district hospitals and health centres across a catchment recorded in academic studies at between five and seven million people. It sits in Area 33, off Mzimba Road, about 4 km from Bwaila Hospital, which refers its highest-risk obstetric cases here. The Department of Surgery covers general, orthopaedic, plastic, paediatric and neurosurgery, and the hospital serves as the national urology referral centre with a COSECSA-accredited urology fellowship that took its first trainees in January 2019. The Department of Medicine runs a high-dependency unit, male and female wards and a medical short-stay ward. Other units include a mixed adult and paediatric intensive care unit, casualty, anaesthesia, and the Ethel Mutharika maternity and nursery units. Published bed figures range from 750 to over 1,000 depending on the source and year. Several partner services operate on the campus. The Lighthouse Trust clinic provides free outpatient HIV care to more than 11,500 patients on antiretroviral therapy. The Baylor College of Medicine Children's Clinical Centre of Excellence opened in 2006 and supports paediatric oncology, emergency medicine and surgery. UNC Project-Malawi supports wards and clinics here and at Bwaila. The Malawi National Cancer Centre, the country's first radiotherapy and nuclear medicine facility, opened alongside the hospital on 2 July 2025. The hospital is a teaching site for medical interns and clinical officers. Care in Malawi's public sector is free at the point of use.
