Bwaila District Hospital

Bwaila District Hospital, registered as Bwaila Hospital and commonly called Bottom Hospital, is a government district hospital in Old Town, Lilongwe, Malawi. The Ministry of Health's Malawi Health Facility Registry lists it under facility code LL040122 as a functional, government-owned district hospital in Lilongwe district, with "Bottom" as its common name. A separate registry entry covers the MPC Bwaila ART Clinic (LL040996). The registry's service inventory for the hospital centres on maternal and newborn care. It includes: - delivery care, with caesarean section, assisted vaginal delivery, manual removal of the placenta and blood transfusion - newborn resuscitation and antiretroviral prophylaxis for newborns - antenatal care, including iron and folic acid supplementation, malaria prevention in pregnancy and tetanus toxoid - family planning, from contraceptive pills, injections and implants to male and female sterilisation - HIV counselling and testing, and antiretroviral treatment for pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission The Bwaila Fistula Centre, also in Lilongwe, is run in collaboration between the Government of Malawi, the Freedom from Fistula Foundation, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and several non-governmental organisations. In May 2026 UNFPA described it as "the only facility in Malawi that performs fistula repair surgery", with about 50 women a month coming from across the country for repairs.
