Joyce Banda Foundation

The Joyce Banda Foundation International is a non-profit charitable foundation founded in 1997 by Dr Joyce Banda, later President of Malawi, and operating independently of her political career. Its stated mission is the socio-economic empowerment of women and youth through entrepreneurship and education, built on four stated principles: academic excellence, service to humanity, universal values and global understanding. Its education arm, Joyce Banda Foundation Schools, is a separate entity based in Chimwankhunda township adjacent to Soche Hill in Blantyre, with its own website at jbfschools.mw. The schools run Reception, Primary and Secondary sections and teach a dual track: the Cambridge syllabus at primary level, and both the Cambridge and the Malawian MANEB syllabus at secondary, so pupils can sit IGCSE and MANEB examinations. They draw students from across Malawi and from Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania, and employ more than 100 staff alongside over 100 support staff. The stated emphasis of the schools is the education of the girl child, while providing education to both boys and girls. The Foundation's other programmes include MWAI, the Market Women Activities Initiative established in 2010, whose name means luck in Chichewa; it runs village banks, microloans, training and inputs, and reports reaching over 5,000 women in chilli farming and more than 10,000 through digital platforms. The Youth Movement in Development covers construction, carpentry, agriculture and sports skills. An orphan care and education programme runs 35 care centres for more than 1,500 children aged three to six, with secondary sponsorship for over 2,500 students. Following Cyclone Freddy in March 2023 the Foundation reported feeding over 20,000 vulnerable children and supporting more than 200,000 women.
