Bwaila District Hospital

Bwaila Hospital, still widely known as Bottom Hospital, is a government district hospital in Lilongwe's Old Town, close to the central market and just south of the M1. It sits roughly 4 km from Kamuzu Central Hospital, to which it refers its highest-risk obstetric cases. Malawi's Ministry of Health facility registry records it as a District Hospital, government-owned and operational, in Lilongwe district, facility code LL040122, with "Bottom" recorded as its common name. A separate registered unit, the MPC Bwaila ART Clinic, operates under the same district code. Maternity and obstetrics are its defining services. THE FISTULA CENTRE. The Bwaila Fistula Care Centre is a partner-run centre that UNFPA states is "the only facility in Malawi that performs fistula repair surgery", operating for over 13 years through collaboration between the Government of Malawi, the Freedom from Fistula Foundation and UNFPA, and seeing approximately 50 women a month from across the country. UNFPA also reports that this is beginning to decentralise: a provider at Nsanje District Hospital has completed capacity-building training at the Centre and is equipped to conduct screenings and perform minor repairs closer to home. That exclusivity claim is UNFPA's, and it is attributed to them rather than stated flatly here. ON COST. Malawi's Ministry of Health states that its essential health package is "accessible to every Malawian free at the point of care", and Bwaila is a government facility.
