Blantyre Secondary School

Blantyre Secondary School is one of Malawi's oldest secondary schools. Its first students, about 50 boys, began in September 1940, and the school was officially opened in April 1941 by the Governor of Nyasaland, Sir Donald Mackenzie-Kennedy. Its first headteacher was Geoffrey Tozer Pike, a lay missionary who was appointed OBE in the 1960 New Year Honours. Its founding attribution is contested, and the question matters. One account credits the Federated Missions working in partnership with the British colonial government; another describes it as the country's first formal government secondary school, predating Dedza Secondary School of 1951. The school expanded to senior secondary provision in 1947, the same year it admitted its first two girls; there were seven by 1951. A separate girls' dormitory followed in 1964 and a girls' boarding block in 1965, built after a government grant. The school operates as a government school under the Ministry of Education, and Blantyre City Council records list the land as Ministry of Education property. The CCAP Blantyre Synod disputes this, stating that the land is church freehold leased to the government in 1946 on a 99-year lease that the Synod does not intend to renew. The dispute was still live in February 2026. Alumni include Henry Masauko Chipembere, John Tembo, Augustine Bwanausi, Willie Chokani, Brown Mpinganjira, the writer and economist D.D. Phiri, Grace Malenga, one of Malawi's first women doctors, and Ceciwa Khonje, Malawi's first woman broadcaster.
