This is a PEP store at Gaborone Main Mall. Main Mall is a car-free pedestrian shopping and commercial precinct running east to west through Gaborone's central business district, rather than a managed shopping centre. It runs from the Government Enclave and National Assembly at its western end to the Gaborone City Town Council complex at its eastern end, where the Civic Centre and the Pula Arch stand; the Botswana Stock Exchange and the National Museum and Art Gallery are nearby. PEP was founded in 1965 by Renier van Rooyen, with its first store in De Aar, South Africa, preceded by bargain stores in Upington from 1955. It is part of the Pepkor group and sells clothing, footwear and homeware. Pepkor reports around 1,685 PEP stores alongside 552 PEP Cell and 478 PEP Home stores, employing 18,000 people, and describes PEP as the largest single-brand retailer in South Africa. Its separate PEP Africa business, covering operations outside South Africa, runs 221 stores with 1,600 employees and sells clothing, footwear, homeware and cellular products.
