About

The Pound Shop is a fabric shop in the Limbe area of Blantyre, Malawi. Shops of this kind sell cloth by the metre or by the length to tailors, dressmakers and households. In Malawi the trade includes chitenje, the printed cotton cloth worn widely across the country as a wrap and also made up into dresses, skirts and shirts. Limbe lies about 11 kilometres east of central Blantyre. It was founded in 1909, grew up as the operational headquarters and workshops of Malawi Railways, and merged with Blantyre in 1956 to form a single city. It remains one of the city's main industrial and trading districts, with manufacturers alongside wholesale and retail traders. Blantyre, founded in 1876 through the missionary work of the Church of Scotland, is the capital of the Southern Region and Malawi's centre of finance and commerce. With 800,264 residents at the 2018 census, it is the country's second-largest city. The shop has not published its stock, prices or payment arrangements online, and phoning ahead before travelling is advisable.
