St John of God Lilongwe Centre

St John of God Lilongwe Centre is a mental health facility in Area 43, Lilongwe, Malawi, run by Saint John of God Hospitaller Services Malawi. The Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority's dispensing licence register records it as St John of God Mental Hospital (Area 43-Lilongwe), under licence PMPB/DL/538 dated 3 May 2016. The register gives its location as Area 43, next to Emmanuel TTC (Emmanuel Teachers Training College), and its postal address as P.O. Box 31067, Lilongwe 3. The same register lists other St John of God dispensing licences, among them one for St John of God Mental Health Services (Lilongwe) at Likuni and one for St John of God in Mzuzu. The organisation takes its name from Saint John of God, founder of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God, a Catholic religious order of brothers who take a fourth vow of serving the sick. John of God founded his first hospital at Granada, Spain, in the 16th century, and Pope Pius V approved the Order of the Brothers Hospitallers in 1572. The order carries out health and social service work in 389 centres and services in 46 countries, and has health projects in several African countries, Malawi among them. Lilongwe is the capital and largest city of Malawi, with a population of 989,318 at the 2018 census. It became the capital in 1975, replacing Zomba. The city is divided into numbered Areas, assigned in the order they were laid out rather than by position.
