New Uptown Lodge

New Uptown Lodge is a lodge in Balaka, the administrative centre of Balaka District in Malawi's Southern Region. Balaka is a township roughly 130 kilometres north of Blantyre and about 200 kilometres south of Lilongwe, with 36,308 residents at the 2018 census. It is a growing commercial centre on the road from Zomba to Lilongwe and lies on the railway between Blantyre and Salima; the onward route to Lilongwe via Salima has closed. Nearby trading centres include Ntcheu, Phalula, Liwonde and Ulongwe. The town is home to Montfort Media, a printing press, and to the Alleluya Band and Zembani Band. Balaka District covers 2,140 square kilometres and had 438,379 inhabitants at the 2018 census. Within the district lies Nkaya, the junction of Malawi's road and rail systems, and the 1,850-hectare Toleza Agricultural Enterprises estate. Room rates, facilities and booking details for the lodge have not been published online, so arrangements have to be made locally in Balaka.
