Mwanza Border Station

Mwanza Border Station is the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) customs post at Mwanza, on Malawi's border with Mozambique in Mwanza District, Southern Region. The MRA's Taxpayer Charter of October 2017 lists the Mwanza border post among the customs stations, alongside Mchinji, Dedza, Biriwiri, Songwe and Muloza, for which it sets a service standard of two hours to process a customs declaration. Through its Customs and Excise division the MRA administers the Customs and Excise Act, collecting import duty, import excise and import VAT, and describes that work as facilitating legitimate trade while protecting society and the environment from harmful and hazardous goods. The MRA was established by an Act of Parliament in 1998 and officially launched in February 2000 as the Government of Malawi's agency for the assessment, collection and accounting of tax and non-tax revenue. Immigration control at border crossings is a separate function, carried out by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services. Mwanza, the administrative centre of Mwanza District, lies about 100 km by road from Blantyre, on the route to Tete in Mozambique. Across the border is Zóbuè, in Mozambique's Moatize District. The town is also a station on the Nacala railway, which links Moatize to the port of Nacala, and had 18,039 residents at the 2018 census. Mwanza District was divided in 2003, when Neno District was created from part of it. The MRA has not published opening hours for the Mwanza border post, so travellers and clearing agents should confirm them before planning a crossing; the authority's national website is mra.mw.
