Mangochi District Council

Mangochi District Council is the local government authority for Mangochi District in Malawi's Southern Region. Its offices are on the M3 in Mangochi, the district's headquarters town near the southern end of Lake Malawi. The Malawi Electoral Commission's 2025 register of voter registration centres, which is arranged by council, lists 355 centres under Mangochi District Council, spread across 12 parliamentary constituencies: Mangochi North, Lutende, East, Monkey Bay, West, Central, North East, Masongola, South West, South, Malombe and Nkungulu. The same register treats Mangochi Municipality, which covers the town itself, as a separate council area. Malawi's district councils were established under the Local Government Act of 1998 as the main tier of local government. They are responsible for devolved services such as primary education, primary health care, water and sanitation, agricultural extension, local roads and markets, and they collect local revenue such as market fees and business licence fees. Each council is made up of elected ward councillors, with the district's members of parliament and traditional authorities sitting as non-voting members, and its secretariat is headed by a District Commissioner. Mangochi District lies around the southern end of Lake Malawi, where the lake drains into the Shire River and on into Lake Malombe, and it borders Mozambique to the east. It takes in the lakeshore around Monkey Bay and Cape Maclear, which lies within Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of the district's people are Yao. Mangochi town, known in the colonial period as Fort Johnston, grew from a British post established on the Shire in the 1890s.
