Its administrative centre is the town of Dowa. It is a farming district: cotton, tobacco and groundnuts are the main cash crops, and maize, sweet potatoes and pulses the main food crops. Most of its people are Chewa, with Ngoni farming communities and Yao traders in the trading centres. Nyau dancing, associated with the Chewa, is an important part of local culture. Lilongwe, Malawi's capital since 1975 and its largest city, lies to the south of the district.
