ESCOM Mzuzu

ESCOM Mzuzu is a site of the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) in Mzuzu, the capital of Malawi's Northern Region, in Mzimba district. ESCOM describes itself as "a state-owned company mandated to transmit, distribute and supply electricity throughout Malawi". It was incorporated in 1998 under the Electricity Act of that year and at first handled generation, transmission, distribution and retail together. Following the Electricity Amendment Act of 2016, generation was separated into another state-owned company, the Electricity Generation Company of Malawi (EGENCO), so ESCOM itself runs no power stations. It now builds, owns, maintains and operates the transmission and distribution network, retails electricity to customers, and acts as system and market operator and single buyer for the whole power sector. Its head office is on Victoria Avenue in Blantyre. Mzuzu is Malawi's third-largest city, with 221,272 inhabitants at the 2018 census. It lies on the M1 highway, which runs the length of the country, and is the northern end of the M5 road towards Nkhata Bay. The city is the commercial centre for a farming region that grows tea, rubber and coffee, and the Viphya plantation, a large man-made forest, lies to the south. For faults and customer service in Mzuzu, ESCOM publishes the short code 3030, shared with Lilongwe and Karonga, and the USSD self-service code *2020#; it has not published opening hours for its Mzuzu premises.
