Dedza Police Station is a station of the Malawi Police Service (MPS) in Dedza, the administrative centre of Dedza District in Malawi's Central Region. The MPS lists Dedza Police Station among the stations of its Central West Region, whose regional headquarters is in Lilongwe. The service traces its origins to the Nyasaland Police Force, established on 5 October 1921 with its headquarters in Zomba. It became the Malawi Police Force after independence and took the name Malawi Police Service in 1994, when the country moved to multiparty democracy. It describes its mandate as preventing, investigating and detecting crime, apprehending and prosecuting offenders, and maintaining law and order. The service falls under the Ministry of Homeland Security and is headed by an Inspector General; its 48 police stations, each headed by an officer in charge, are grouped into six policing regions. Dedza lies about 85 km south of Lilongwe, off the M1 road to Blantyre. At about 1,590 metres it is described as the highest town in Malawi, and it is known for Dedza Pottery; Dedza Mountain (2,198 m) rises above it. The town had 30,928 residents at the 2018 census, and the surrounding district contains the Chongoni Rock Art Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The station's telephone number, as given in the Malawi Police Service's published list of station contacts, is +265 887 393 643.
