Blantyre was founded in 1876 as a Church of Scotland mission and named after David Livingstone's birthplace in Scotland. In 1956 it was merged with the neighbouring town of Limbe into a single municipality, which became a city in 1966. It is Malawi's main commercial centre and its second-largest city, with a population of about 800,000 at the 2018 census, and it is administered by Blantyre City Council.
