Bakhita Secondary School

Bakhita Secondary School, whose full name is Bakhita Girls Secondary School, is a Catholic boarding secondary school for girls off Zammimba Road in Balaka, Malawi. It was opened in 2003 by the Canossian Daughters of Charity, known locally as the Canossian Sisters. According to the school's own website, its students board full-time on campus and are taught from Form 1 to Form 4. The subjects it lists are English, Chichewa, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Life Skills, Geography, History, Social Studies, Computer Studies, Bible Knowledge and Agriculture. The site also shows a hostel, a library and a dining hall. Admission is by entrance examination, held for entry to Form 1 and to Form 3. For the 2026/27 intake the Form 1 papers covered Mathematics, English and Primary Science, and the Form 3 papers Mathematics, English and Combined Sciences, with examination centres in Balaka, Blantyre and Lilongwe. The Canossian Daughters of Charity are a Catholic religious congregation founded by Magdalene of Canossa in Verona, Italy, in 1808; education, catechesis and care of the sick are its main works. Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese-born former slave who entered the congregation in Venice in 1888, was canonised by Pope John Paul II in 2000. Secondary education in Malawi runs from Form 1 to Form 4 and ends with the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), set by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB).
