Pilane is the junction on the main Gaborone–Francistown road from which a short turn leads to Mochudi. Mochudi lies about 37 km north-east of Gaborone and, with 50,321 residents at the 2022 census, is one of the larger villages in Botswana. The Bakgatla settled there in 1871, at the foot of Phuthadikobo Hill beside the Notwane River, after migrating from what is now South Africa under pressure from the Boers. The Phuthadikobo Museum, housed on the hilltop in the village's first school, holds photographs and documents on the history of Mochudi and the Bakgatla.
