Maokane Sub Land Board

Maokane Sub Land Board is a subordinate land board at Maokane in southern Botswana, one of the sub-land boards of the Ngwaketse Land Board. It comes under the Ministry of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services and allocates tribal land in its part of the Ngwaketse area. The board appears in the Government of Botswana's directory of land boards. In July 2022 the government's Daily News named it as one of the Ngwaketse Land Board's six sub-land boards, alongside Kanye, Moshupa, Mmathethe, Phitshane-Molopo and Mabutsane, when the main board announced a plan to allocate 21,974 plots across the six and urged applicants on its waiting list to confirm their contact details with their sub-land board. In June 2024 the main board's chairperson told the Daily News that the Kanye, Mabutsane, Maokane and Mmathethe sub-land boards were busy allocating plots, and that more than 17,000 plots of that target had been allocated. The Ministry describes how the system works. Tribal land is allocated by twelve main land boards and their forty-one subordinate land boards. All citizens of Botswana aged 18 and over may apply for available tribal land in any tribal territory, with a certified copy of a valid national identity card (Omang). Applicants who are granted land receive a Certificate of Customary Grant as evidence of their right to it, and the Ministry states that allocation should be completed within three months of land becoming available. The Ngwaketse Land Board is the main land board for the Ngwaketse tribal area of the Southern District. In 2022 it reported working with Southern District Council's physical planners to speed up layout designs, and its deputy board secretary urged the public to register for Secure Land Title certificates.
