Extension 2 Magistrate Court

Extension 2 Magistrate Court is a magistrates' court in Gaborone, Botswana, forming part of the judiciary under the Administration of Justice, which lists it as the Extension II court. The Administration of Justice's contact directory names three other magistrates' courts in the city: Village, Broadhurst and Regional South. In the Administration of Justice's own words, magistrates' courts "are created by statute, the Magistrates Courts Act, as subordinate courts. They are subordinate to the High Court." They have no constitutional status and are controlled and supervised by the High Court through reviews and appeals. The work it lists for these courts includes: - family cases, including paternity and maintenance - child adoption - domestic violence restraining orders - civil suits, such as debt and contract disputes - motion court proceedings - criminal trials, covering offences such as rape, robbery, theft and assault The courts under the Administration of Justice are the Court of Appeal, the High Court, which sits in Gaborone, Lobatse and Francistown, and the magistrates' courts. In 1966 Botswana had only two magistrates' courts, in Lobatse and Francistown. Since then the courts have moved from being presided over by administration officers to being staffed wholly by professional magistrates with legal qualifications, and they now sit at 27 centres around the country.
