Edgars Game City

Edgars Game City is a branch of the Edgars clothing chain in Shop 200 of Game City Shopping Centre, near Kgale Hill in Gaborone, Botswana. Edgars was founded on 6 September 1929 by the brothers Morris and Eli Ross, whose first store opened on Joubert Street in Johannesburg; the name was inspired by the London department store Swan and Edgar. In the 1950s and 1960s the chain widened its range from women's fashion to men's and children's clothing, footwear, fabrics and jewellery. In July 2020 the Durban-based group Retailability acquired 130 of Edgars' 194 stores, aiming to reposition the brand as a mass-market fashion and beauty retailer. Retailability, founded in 1984, gives the Edgars brand's footprint as 135 stores in five countries: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini. Turnstar Holdings, which lists Game City in its property portfolio, describes it as "the first indoor mall to be built in Botswana". According to Turnstar the mall covers approximately 70,000 square metres and has 140 shops, among them clothing and shoe shops, jewellers, banks, pharmacies and furniture stores, with Game as its flagship store. It has covered parking, an IT hub and a food court on the second floor, and two event venues on the first floor used for corporate events, weddings, parties and exhibitions. Kgale Hill, nicknamed the Sleeping Giant, rises to 1,287 metres a few hundred metres from the city. Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, had 246,325 residents at the 2022 census. Edgars has not published this store's stock or trading details online, so phoning ahead before a special trip is advisable.
