Botswana Power Corporation - Selebi-Phikwe

Botswana Power Corporation - Selebi-Phikwe is an office of the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), the state-owned electricity utility, in the mining town of Selebi-Phikwe in Botswana's Central District. BPC's 2020 annual report and 2023 integrated report both list Selebi-Phikwe among the corporation's regional offices, alongside Morupule at Palapye and Francistown, and give its postal address as P O Box 170, Selebi-Phikwe. BPC was formed in 1970, after Parliament passed the Botswana Power Corporation Act, and is the country's only electricity supplier, responsible for generation, transmission and distribution. Its headquarters are at Motlakase House, Macheng Way, Gaborone. It runs the coal-fired Morupule A (132 MW) and Morupule B (600 MW) power stations, keeps diesel emergency plants at Orapa and Matshelagabedi, imports power from neighbouring countries to meet the rest of demand, and represents Botswana in the Southern African Power Pool. BPC's website promotes its SmartPower app for paying bills and buying electricity, an online customer portal, and services including new connections, meter inspections and rooftop solar applications. Selebi-Phikwe grew up around the copper-nickel mine that BCL Limited opened in 1973, with a small coal-fired power station alongside it. The mine ceased operations in September 2016, and the Selebi Phikwe Economic Development Unit (SPEDU) works to broaden the local economy. The town had 42,488 residents at the 2022 census and hosts the Phikwe Marathon.
