Chicken Licken at The Fields Mall in Gaborone's central business district is certified halaal by the Botswana Muslim Association, which listed it in its July to August 2024 certification list. The Fields Mall opened on 28 July 2022, developed and owned by CBD Fields Holdings, with 26,000 square metres of trading space. It sits in Gaborone's central business district between the CBD and the city's bus terminal, and Chicken Licken was named among its opening tenants. Chicken Licken is a South African fried chicken quick-service restaurant chain founded in 1981 by George Sombonos and operated by Golden Fried Chicken (Pty) Ltd, a private company headquartered in Johannesburg. Its signature hot wings were introduced in 1992. The chain reported 259 outlets in 2013, of which 12 were in Botswana, and a separate figure of 18 Botswana outlets in 2021. It operates in South Africa and Botswana, having closed former operations in Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Mauritius, Lesotho and Eswatini.
